Since the shipowner did not respond to the call to save his ship, the American coast guard decided to sink it, because in free sailing Reuun Maru clearly threatened shipping, and the Americans obviously did not want to mess with towing and subsequent disposal. On April 6, the trawler was shot by a US Coast Guard boat.
