Microwave vice versa: quick cooling

When you return home on a hot day and find that you forgot to put your favorite drink in the refrigerator, you will probably regret that your kitchen does not have a “microwave on the contrary” - a device that could cool a can or a bottle of liquid in a few seconds. However, soon such a device may well appear on sale, and you do not have to wait 10-15 minutes for the beer or soda to cool in the freezer.

Several companies, united in the framework of the European RapidCool project, have developed V-Tex technology. V-Tex coolers can lower the temperature of a drink in a can or bottle from room temperature to 4 ° C in less than 45 seconds. To do this, the container is immersed in cold water and untwisted, creating a cylindrical vortex inside itself, which theoretically can be described as a Rankin vortex. This movement of the liquid allows you to cool the drink, avoiding the excessive release of gas bubbles when opening a bottle or can.

However, the centrifugal forces inside the Rankin vortex keep the cold liquid closer to the walls of the vessel, and the warm one to its center, preventing mixing and efficient cooling. Therefore, V-Tex then creates a vortex, then again destroys it, alternately rotating the container around one of the two axes.

It is planned that both larger commercial and compact household chillers will appear on the market. In fact, on the scale of large stores, such devices will even save energy, as customers can quickly cool their chosen drink for themselves, and owners do not have to keep these products constantly chilled. V-Tex saves more than 80% energy compared to some standard open beverage refrigerators and 54% more economical than glass door refrigerators (these results are based on cooling 200 half-liter cans per day).

Soon, RapidCool will begin testing V-Tex in the Netherlands, and early consumers will be able to evaluate the effectiveness of this technology.
