How was the airplane designed for the movie Ghost?

Work on the aircraft began with a search for a visual image. The concept artist, who shoveled mountains of illustrations of existing aircraft, took the very first place on a creative shift. The director of the film, Alexander Voitinsky, set the task to create an airplane of the future. Everyone liked the first of the proposed options, but over time, the design of the ship nevertheless underwent major changes in order to become closer in form to mass-produced aircraft.

“The initial design of the aircraft was to our liking, ” says Mikhail Lyosin, Technical Director of Main Road | Post, “but from an engineering point of view it raised a number of questions. In the course of further refinement, he ceased to look too futuristic and approached real-life aircraft. In addition, we needed to correlate our design with the built interior on the site. ”

The filmmakers took the dimensions of the Yak-40 as the basis for the dimensions of the interior decoration. Making upscale armchairs and finishing in the allotted time was quite problematic, so the salon was also created using computer graphics. Actors played in a green interior, which was later replaced by a computer created. However, the main difficulty was not the cabin, but the fuselage. The most difficult thing was to imitate subtle concavities and irregularities in the metal - such details had to be recreated, since the plane was shown in close-up. The studio’s three-dimensional staff came in handy with a shader (describing the material and its properties subroutine), previously tested on the teaser of the yet-out space film “Time of the First”. The model was visualized in the Mantra program, capable of producing a photorealistic picture.

The frames inside the cabin in a scene with a sharp roll, when everything flies upside down, was shot in the scenery. Actors were moved around the cabin with trolleys and safety ropes. Subsequently, all excess equipment was wiped from frames on the computer.

If the aircraft cabin was created in 3D, then the cockpit is a complete decoration. Here are just touch displays - this is a video design product created by the artists of Dago Studio. During the shooting, the actors just clicked on the green panel. The landscape outside the cabin windows was also added at the post-production stage.

Of particular difficulty was tracking (tracking and restoring camera movement - approx. Author) of the footage due to the use of anamorphic optics by the camera crew. These lenses allow you to shoot widescreen movies, but differ in a large number of artifacts and not the most stable focus. Three-dimensional people had to show a fair amount of patience and ability to take into account the peculiarities of optics and integrate the aircraft efficiently into the shooting frame.


Graphic artists not only simulated an airplane, but also created a sky with clouds on a computer.

“As a rule, for such creative tasks, ” comments Mikhail Lesin, “the matte-painting technique is used (background painting - author's note). But in our case, this method would not work, since the director planned to show the plane in dynamics from different angles. And we simply would not have found the required number of photographs with similar lighting. ”

Thus, the artists developed a celestial map with a digital simulation of clouds. So scenes with an airplane in the air are 100% computer graphics and animation. The same can be said about frames with towing a vessel using a tractor.


The effect with the passage of the hero Fyodor Bondarchuk through the walls is realized by means of compositing (multi-layer editing - author's note) and three-dimensional completion of the necessary objects. There is a scene in the film when a different aircraft designer who has died in the world walks around the office. On the set, the wall section was simply removed so that the actor could calmly go through. Subsequently, the wall was restored on the computer. Moreover, at the moment of passing through the opening, laser marks were projected onto Bondarchuk from the plane builder, so that the graphic artists better understood at what point the actor should be “cut off”.

The scene in the bus, in which a ghost drags a student between rows of chairs, was shot in several passes. Bondarchuk rode down the aisle in a bus on a trolley, a schoolboy flew on ropes. The front and back of the bus were also removed separately. Later, all these elements were combined into a single image at the stage of compositing in the Nuke program.

In total, the film "Ghost" has more than 250 plans with computer graphics. According to the producer of the picture, Mikhail Vrubel, about 20 million rubles were spent on computer graphics in the picture. At the same time, the effects in the picture are not an independent attraction, but serve as a modern frame of a moving story about friendship and growing up.
