How do gold leaf work?

It is hard to believe that one gram of gold can be stretched into a thread almost three kilometers long, and a gold coin can be flattened into a sheet with a thickness of 0.0001 millimeters the size of a tatami. Gold leaf is a sheet of gold with a thickness of about 100 nanometers, which are usually used for decorative purposes.

It is usually made by casting a bar one centimeter thick followed by rolling into a thin strip using the softness of the metal. Then the Japanese artisans beat the gold, gradually flattening it into a thin, almost transparent sheet.

Recently, Swiss scientists made airgel out of gold: gold made as light as air
