End of an era: Sony officially discontinues support for the PlayStation 2
The PlayStation 3 was introduced in 2006, but Sony still continued to produce PS2 - until 2012. However, despite the completion of production, over the past six years, Japanese users of the old set-top box could still send the device for repair to the company's service center. But this support for PS2, according to Kotaku, will be discontinued - from September 7.
PlayStation 2 has become the best-selling console in the world: around 155 million copies of the console were sold worldwide, with more than 21 million of them in Japan. Many legendary games have been released on PS2 - both multiplatform and exclusive.
