In 2006, a funny discussion appeared on bash.org about whether uranium scrap will sink in mercury. Of course, drowning a real scrap made of uranium in a mercury vat is an unsafe and very expensive task, so chemists from Youtube managed without too much risk and conducted an experiment on a smaller scale. It turned out that uranium is a metal too heavy, so even a high density of mercury will not allow the rod to float on the surface:
