Coxsackie virus in Turkey: dangerous or not?

In Turkey, you can now not only plunge into the blue sea and see the old cities, but also become infected with Koksaki viruses. The Turkish Ministry of Health does not name what is happening as an epidemic, but cases of the disease have been reported in Kemer, Alanya, Side and other cities. Among the sick, there were already 500 Russians; one nine-month-old baby brought the virus to Moscow.

Coxsackie virus can be almost harmless, and can turn into serious problems. The most dangerous manifestation is serous meningitis, an inflammation of the brain that brings with it a painful headache, fever, cough and runny nose, muscle pain, and increased sensitivity to light and touch. True, the serous variety is less dangerous than other types of meningitis, and usually passes easily, without causing serious consequences and complications.

The milder forms of the disease with Koksaki viruses are accompanied by a rash on the face and hands, inflammation of the eyes and mucous membranes of the mouth and throat, and fever. Even without taking antiviral drugs, the disease usually disappears in one to two weeks, but there are exceptions, including with a fatal outcome, especially among children, therefore, at the first suspicion, you should go to the doctor and be sure to tell that you were in Turkey .

Usually, Koksaki viruses are infected through food and drink, so Roskomnadzor recommends that, while on vacation, do not forget about simple rules:

  • wash vegetables, fruits and berries
  • to wash hands
  • observe personal hygiene
  • drink only boiled or bottled water

In addition, you can get infected by airborne droplets. Therefore, while in Turkey during an outbreak, it is useful to avoid shared pools and saunas. This is especially true for children: Rospotrebnadzor does not recommend them to enroll in resort children's clubs and completely exclude swimming in pools.
