A Christmas tree was born in the forest ... And what will happen to it next

Residents of fairly northern countries have long had an illogical New Year's custom - to decorate some pretty coniferous tree with beautiful, in human opinion, toys, put gifts under it for children and enjoy the procedure itself and its atmosphere. They say that this tradition is also among the inhabitants of insufficiently northern countries, but they have some other plants in use there. And we will talk about the well-known spruce (Pícea ábies), the most famous species of the genus spruce, pine family. In principle, most of the above applies to other conifers.

A little Christmas tree is cold in winter ...

In the wild, the tree lives about four centuries, reaching a height of fifty meters. The diameter of the barrel at this moment may exceed one third of a meter. But - this is if the surrounding conditions are favorable enough. At the northern borders of its range, as well as at high altitudes, somewhere in the Alps, spruce can turn into a dwarf tree - a dwarf form that grows on the ground and almost does not rise above it. Of course, you cannot meet the New Year with such a tree.

A typical Christmas tree is grown in a nursery. We could not find out the exact number of them, both Christmas trees and nurseries, but, as sociologists found out, 27% of Russians surveyed prefer a live Christmas tree. At a minimum, we are talking about many millions of trees every year.

In the first year of its life, the Christmas tree grows to a height of 3-4 cm. Then the process accelerates to the two-meter "growth" characteristic of urban apartments, the spruce gets in about ten years. This field is cut down and taken from the nursery, like the one shown in the video above, to the Christmas tree market.

Note that a typical modern nursery is a diversified enterprise. Almost certainly, other conifers suitable for New Year's festivals grow on the neighboring site: spruce of different species, pine, thuja. But life is not limited to the New Year - seedlings of apple, pear and red currant will also be sold to you here.

From the forest we took the Christmas tree home ...

In recent years, Russia has seen a fashion for buying Christmas trees in pots. At the same time, the earth around the roots is preserved, and the roots themselves. Theoretically, such a tree after the holiday can be planted in the ground and pretend that it was here originally. In fact, if you are not a botanist-tree specialist with extensive experience, then the chances of keeping the tree alive are very small. Imagine that a plant from winter frost gets into heat - and immediately. Around is warm and light - it means time to grow and develop. The sap flow begins. And after a few days, the green beauty is again exposed to frost and again sharply. Here comes the inevitable ending.

The Christmas tree can be kept alive and healthy, but not in urban conditions. You have your own lawn where you can plant it, and then bring waterproofing wiring for the garlands there. Then - yes, the result of the holiday will be the survival of the plant, which is likely to serve the next holidays.

Shine Christmas tree!

Then the Christmas tree is at home. A hustle and bustle with toys and gifts begins for the whole family. It is important to remember that under your roof there was a fire hazardous facility. Christmas tree burns fast and hot. A few weeks after the holiday, it will dry out, and when the needles sprinkle from it, it will really look like a small incendiary shell. By the way, if you do not have camping and tourist experience, we recall: small spruce branches, even a little damp, light up wonderfully. That is why they are used to light a fire, along with birch bark. And in a city apartment they will be drier. By the way, as all the same sociologists found out, about 4% of citizens do not throw out Christmas trees until the summer ...

It should be noted that an artificial tree burns in general no worse, but there is even more smoke from it. At the video below, a natural Christmas tree burns, as a result, after 40 seconds nothing is visible in the room due to smoke. With plastic, this result would be achieved about twice as fast.

Wood or plastic?

There are a lot of artificial Christmas trees in today's market and arranging their review, obviously there isn’t much point. Synthetic beauties are made of PVC and similar plastics and differ in the size, shape and design of artificial needles.

The choice between artificial and natural Christmas trees is determined by the importance of several factors for you. A plastic Christmas tree is more budgetary - its cost is comparable to natural, but it will last many times and will not crumble.

Natural - greener. Buying it, you are financing a nursery, where it grew and the next one grows, and besides it there are many other useful plants. Buying artificial, you finance the production and refining of oil.

Finally, the natural Christmas tree smells better, although it is also not for everybody.

The end of the Christmas tree is unaesthetic. In the reality surrounding us, it will go to garbage, which will be burnt at best, and at worst buried. In slightly more civilized countries, New Year's beauties are usually collected and processed into chips and sawdust. Then from them you can make chipboard, fuel briquettes, and much more. On that and the tale is over.
